On Saturday, September 11, 2021, Wilford Wisel, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 80.
Wilford was born on May 2, 1941 in Enid, Oklahoma to Joe and Minnie (Miller) Wisel. He graduated from Custer City High School as class valedictorian in 1959, participating in Future Farmers of America and band. During high school, Wilford met a pretty young lady named Glenna Grant from Arapaho, Oklahoma. They were engaged and then married in September 1960.
Wilford and Glenna moved to Wilburton, OK to attend Eastern Oklahoma State College where he served as Baptist Student Union Director. Wilford was ordained to ministry in Wilburton, Oklahoma in May 1962. After graduating with an associates degree from Wilburton, Wilford graduated with an education degree from Northeastern State College, before gaining a Master of Divinity degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary at Fort Worth. Wilford would later earn a Doctor of Ministry degree from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
After seminary, Wilford served as pastor of several Oklahoma congregations over more than 40 years. His first pastorate was First Baptist Church in Temple, and then he became the pastor of a new church mission in Lawton, First Baptist West. While in Lawton, Wilford also served as an Army Reserve chaplain. From Lawton, he led congregations in Thomas, Durant, Garber, and Marlin. Ministry never stopped for Wilford, as he looked forward to preaching at the Remington retirement home on Sunday afternoons the past couple years.
While in Lawton, Wilford and Glenna had two sons, Doug and Kevin. Wilford was consistently proud of his family, telling anyone who would listen about his wife and his boys. Wilford had a passion for woodworking and gardening. He enjoyed making furniture, pens, and anything else that people might need, including a wooden train for a church vacation Bible school. When gardening, he continually increased the size of his garden so he could give more produce to friends and church members. He was known for always being willing to help, and he loved when people brought him projects or challenges.
Wilford was preceded in death by his father, Joe, his mother, Minnie, his brother, James, and two sons, Mark and Timothy, who died shortly after birth. He is survived by his wife Glenna, his two sons, Doug (Mechel) and Kevin (Monica), his brother Bob (Bonnie), and four grandchildren, Josh, Jake, Matt, and Ashley.
A memorial service and celebration of Wilfords life will be held on Sunday, September 26th at 3 pm at Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home, 606 West Airport Freeway, Irving, TX. Relatives and friends are invited to share memories and stories during the service. The service will be live-streamed as well.
