Obituary

Virginia (Ginger) Frances Carpenter Hornburg, 82, of Irving Texas, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 8, 2018. Ginger was born at home in rural East Texas, on December 5, 1935. As a child, she loved spending time with her grandfather, affectionately known as Daddy-Man. If she wasn't seen around town sitting high on his shoulder, she would 'help out' at his hardware store in Jacksonville, Texas. In high school, Ginger excelled at math. She was also a valued member of the North Dallas High School swim team. It was no surprise when she later became a swim instructor at Benbrook Park in Ft. Worth, TX., as well as the neighborhood volunteer math tutor. Just prior to her high school graduation in June, 1953, Ginger met a boy at church named Jack Hornburg. Jack would later tell family that Ginger was the only girl that 'didn't chase him and act silly', so he thought he'd better marry her before someone else did. They were married on October 31, 1953. As a homemaker, Ginger was known for her neighborhood nursing skills, her ability to break up street fights between boys a foot taller than she was, and her involvement with the L.B. Barton Elementary PTA, serving as President in 1971, and her implementation of the local PTA Neighborhood Watch program. Ginger was also known for her excellent cooking, her award-winning landscape paintings, and her volunteer work at Baylor Hospital. In her 25 years as a Baylor volunteer, she served two terms on the Hospital Auxiliary Board as President and Vice President. She also organized Baylor Hospital's 40th Anniversary fund-raising cookbook entitled, Let's Cook! Ginger retired from volunteer service in 2012, but remained a familiar face to many. Ginger is survived by her daughter, Brenda, son, Barry and his wife Lisa, granddaughter Hana Chandler and her husband Wesley, grandson Bo Hornburg and his wife Chelsea, and great-granddaughter Sofia, sisters Patsy Poe, Linda Gomez, and a host of much-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ginger was preceded in death by her husband Jack, son Bryan, father Charles Carpenter, and mother Madge Leatherwood, step-father Petey Leatherwood, beloved grandfather Daddy-man' Saxon, and brothers David Abbott and Larry Leatherwood.
