Obituary

Terry Lynn "Ski" Mitchell, 66, of Irving, Texas, was taken from this life, much too soon, on May 3, 2026.

Born on January 26, 1960, in Fort Worth, Texas, to J.C. and Audrey Mitchell, Terry was the third-born of six children. In 1964, he and his family moved to Irving, where he attended L.B. Barton Elementary School, Crockett Junior High, and Irving High School.

Terry loved music, golf, playing billiards, skiing, and as an avid fisherman he loved the great outdoors. He especially loved hanging swings high in the trees for children, believing that the higher the branch and the longer the chain, the closer to the heavens they could soar. He sang and played guitar and harmonica and, later in life, began studying piano. He enjoyed listening to, singing, and playing all genres of music, but in recent years had developed a love for contemporary Christian music. Some of his happiest times were spent simply hanging out with his best friend – his younger brother, Ricky.

Following in the footsteps of his father, uncles, and cousins, Terry built a lifelong career in construction and became known as someone who could do it all, and he enjoyed teaching the trade to others as well. Yet, of all his accomplishments, his proudest moment came with the birth of his beautiful daughter, Danielle. In 1999, Terry and his family moved to Cartersville, Georgia, where he continued his construction career until returning to Irving in 2024.

Terry was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Donna Cabe Mitchell, and by his father, Rev. J.C. Mitchell.

He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Mitchell Waltz and husband Albert, and grandson Avery, of Cartersville, Georgia; his mother, Audrey Cox Mitchell of Irving, Texas; his sister, Delores Coleen Mitchell Sacy and husband Rick of Grand Prairie, Texas; his sister, Birtha Mitchell West and husband Pete of Burleson, Texas; his sister, Melody Mitchell Fowler and husband Kenneth of Cleburne, Texas; his brother, Ricky Mitchell of Pine Mills, Texas; his brother, Johnny Mitchell and wife Shannon of Cleburne, Texas; his sister-in-law, Kim Davoust and husband, Paul of Irving. He also leaves behind 24 nieces and nephews, 24 great-nieces and great-nephews, and one great-great-niece.

Terry was a man of great resilience. He lived his life with quiet perseverance, always putting one foot in front of the other and continuing forward with strength and determination. One only need to listen to a playlist of his favorite music to understand the peace and comfort he found through his relationship with his Lord.

He often reflected on the Casting Crowns song "Only Jesus", stating that he did not want to leave a legacy. As the song says, he did not care if anyone remembered him – only Jesus. In a life filled with music, laughter, hard work, family, and love, that quiet faith remained close to his heart and became his ever–present source of strength. Although Terry's absence leaves an ache words cannot fully express and time will never erase, we are comforted in the assurance that Terry is finally home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and reunited with the love of his life.
