Obituary

STEVE K. ASKINS, age 62, devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend passed away Thursday, May 19 at his home surrounded by his loving family. A resident of Irving, Texas since 1956, he succumbed to cancer after a courageous decade-long battle. Born August 1, 1948 in Corsicana, Texas, he is survived by several lifelong friends from both Irving High School and North Texas State University. He served in the United States Air Force Reserve from 1971 to 1977. An accomplished certified public accountant, he partnered with Robert Yeager and Company in Dallas for over 35 years before becoming self employed in 2010. He was known for his passionate love of nature and the outdoors and served as a Scout Master for Irvings Troop 508. Steve shared his love of learning and challenged others to do the same. His avid thirst for knowledge inspired many family dinner quiz competitions and Scrabble matches that led to a well-used set of encyclopedias and dictionaries. His knowledge of native Texas wildlife, birds or music were rarely matched. Preceded in death by his parents Samuel Wade Askins and Jimmie Opal Haigood Askins. Survived by his dedicated wife Vicky Ann Askins; sons, Dustin Kyle Askins and wife Lindsay and Shane Austin Askins; daughters by heart, Gayle Marie Jones and Terri Rensel Blake; a grandson, Kelton Askins; brother, Mike Askins; sisters, Leslie Bilyeu and husband Tim and Laurie Ayers and husband Clint; five nieces, Lindsay Bilyeu, Stephanie Bilyeu, Emily Ayers, Holly Ayers, and Heather Ayers; and cherished pets Chewie and Scarlet. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Donnellys Colonial Funeral Home, 606 W. Airport Freeway in Irving. Followed by a graveside service on Wednesday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. at Restland Memorial Park, 9220 Restland Road, Dallas, Texas 75243. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society designated to Prostate Cancer Research or the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.
