Obituary

Sharon L. Roeser, passed away on Wednesday, Sept 15, 2022. Sharon is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ross; three daughters, Wendy, Elizabeth (Liza) and Jennifer; sibling, Sandy Danner; half siblings Michael Skirmont, Steven Skirmont, Cathy Skirmont, Connie Skirmont, and Jeff Skirmont, David Hill, Michael Hill and Martha Hill; four grandchildren Jonah Melander, Jillian Melander, Alexandra Atwood and Eloise Atwood; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Violet Skirmont and Floyd Hill. She was born in Harvey, Illinois and attended Ascension grade school and Bremen High School where she met Ross Roeser. They went "steady" throughout high school and then married. Over the next 10-12 years Sharon and Ross attended several universities and achieved undergraduate and post-graduate degrees. They moved from Tallahassee, Florida where they were both studying at Florida State University to Dallas, Texas in 1971. Sharon taught elementary school in Dallas, first at St. Cecelias Catholic School, then for 36 years in the Dallas Independent School District at James Bowie, Stevens Park and Louise Wolf Kahn. She loved teaching her students and challenging them to do their best whenever possible. She became interested in bilingual education and studied Spanish seriously so she could help transition her Spanish only-speaking students to facilitate them to learn English. Sharon was known as the "popcorn and ice cream afficionado" and the "bee lady." At social functions she was always the first and last person to step up to the ice cream tub and enjoy her favorite dessert; and at home it wasnt unusual when asked "whats for dinner" to say "just popcorn." Her passion for bees was spawned by her love of nature and all things associated with it; she paid attention to the changing of the seasons, the lives of insects and spiders, flowers and trees. Beekeeping developed when Ross and Sharon bought a small farm in Tool, Texas in 2004. She spent hours in her bee yard tending to her "ladies" with as many as 12 hives, providing them with shelter and subsistence in the form of sugar when they needed it. She joined the East Texas Beekeepers Association and was active in forming a student scholarship for young beekeepers to promote the hobby.
