Roy James Lohden, a Dallas Icon, passed away at 70 years of age on February 18, 2011. He was born in Lane, Oklahoma in a log cabin with a dirt floor. Although he was born in Oklahoma, he moved to Texas as soon as he could. Roy was the second of six children. He grew up knowing the values of faith, love and hard work. Determined to have the best he could, he was never shy about working hard. Roy graduated from Sunset High School and then attended Cisco Jr. College before finishing at the University of Texas at Arlington. Before completing his education, he married and started his family while working at Lone Star Gas Company. It wasnt long after working there that fate started him on a journey that created Dallas Demolition. Through his work ethic, Roy was able to carve out and clear countless structures throughout North Texas. He was always aware that his work was making way for the future. Roy appreciated that every day is a gift from God and he wanted to live every one of them to the fullest.
He was known for many larger than life projects in the area. Roy brought down the Saturn Missile Tower, the Mayfair Hotel, the Gibraltar Building, the Navarro Hotel, Northpark III, the Holiday Inn at Meadow, First Citizens Bank (Tyler, TX) and most recently the eight structures at First Baptist Church, 5 of which were imploded, just to name a few.
Roy is survived by his sister, Glenna Miller, two brothers, Buddy and Roger Lohden, wife of 43 years, Jerry Lee Lohden, 12 children: Greg (Robin) Lohden, Chris (Virginia) Brown, Tony (Tricia) Lohden, Leslie (Ed) Lee, Wendy (Walt) Baker, Chris (Tiffani) Lohden, Eric (Karen) Lohden, Sabrina (Nicolas) Delacretaz, Holly (Chad) Smith, Ashley Meyer, Sunny (Anne) Lohden, 29 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents Ancle and Flossie Lohden, sister Shirley Ozment and brother Kenneth Lohden.
Roy James Lohden was a very generous, naturally strong businessman who never met a stranger. He was a huge animal lover, so much so that he changed from being a hunter to a preserver of Gods creatures. He was a cattleman, a rancher, a gin rummy enthusiast, horse and NASCAR racing supporter. He lived life fully!
But more than anything else, he was an ever present, devoted, loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather and great grandfather who will be greatly missed and remembered fondly! Visitation will be held on Friday, February 25, 2011 from 6:00 8:00 pm at First Baptist Church Dallas in the sanctuary. A funeral service honoring Roys life will be held at First Baptist Church Dallas on Saturday, February 26th at 12:00 noon. Roy will be laid to rest on the family ranch near Corsicana at the Roy J. Lohden Cemetery following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Building Fund, Scottish Rite Foundation or Star Childrens Charity.
