Robert Salvatore
Romano
Mar 24, 1934 — Feb 12, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Salvatore Romano, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who left this world peacefully on February 12, 2025, at the age of 90. His extraordinary journey began on March 24, 1934, in Rutland, Vermont, where he was born to Italian parents, Salvatore John Romano and Mary Domenica Cioffi Romano.
Bob, as he was affectionately known, was a man of many talents and a heart full of love. Raised in the picturesque Green Mountains of Vermont, he graduated from Mount Saint Joseph's Academy in 1952. His curiosity and thirst for knowledge led him on an educational journey that included attending Arlington State College, I.B.M. Formal Technical and Engineering School, Northlake College for an Associates Degree, and even a Viticulture and Distilling Program at Grayson College. Bob was a lifelong learner, embracing new challenges and opportunities at every turn.
In 1952, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force, beginning a distinguished service career that included a tour at Perrin Air Force Base in Sherman, Texas. At Perrin, he graduated from Analogue/Watch Repair School and he quickly advanced as an Aeronautical Instrumentation Engineer servicing the F86D fighter jet during the Korean War. While stationed there, he met the love of his life, Frances Sherlene Sloan, at the Texas Theatre. Bob was smitten at first sight, proclaiming to his friend that he would one day marry the girl selling popcorn at the counter. Their love blossomed, leading to their marriage on December 11, 1954, a bond that would endure for 70 years until Bob's passing.
Bob's professional life was as diverse as his interests. At just 14, he began working at Carroll's Drug Store, and he later took on roles at the Rutland Drive-In Theatre and Rutland Railway. After moving to Texas, Bob's career flourished at Chance Vought and later at IBM, where he dedicated over 28 years of service. His international expertise led him to Tripoli, Libya, as a Field Engineer, showcasing his skills in maintaining the IBM System/360 Model 40. Bob retired in 1989, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and excellence.
His contributions extended beyond his career. A passionate community member, Bob was a Charter Member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Irving and an active participant in the Knights of Columbus, second generation Elk Member, and the Italian American Club in Rutland. His civic dedication included serving on the City of Irving Planning and Zoning Committee and Irving City Council, where he proudly represented the interests of his fellow citizens.
Bob was not just a leader; he was a visionary. In 1998, he proposed the creation of a Veteran's Memorial and Park in Irving, a project that became a reality and was dedicated on May 23, 2004. This park stands as a tribute to the sacrifices of veterans and a testament to Bob's unwavering dedication to honoring his fellow servicemen and women.
Outside of work and community service, Bob had a zest for life that was infectious. He loved winemaking and often used the family bathtub as a fermentation chamber. He relished traveling across Europe, escaping the Texas heat for the cool embrace of the Vermont mountains, and sharing joyous meals surrounded by family and friends, where his quick wit and laughter would light up the room.
Bob is preceded in death by his brother, John Carmen Romano. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sherlene Sloan Romano; daughter, Paula Romano Marsh, and her husband, Michael Marsh; son, Niles Romano, and his wife, Sarah Romano; and grandchildren: Montana Dale Marsh and wife, Daphne Marsh; Madeline Sloan Marsh Brinkley and husband, Dakota Brinkley; Manning Oliver Marsh; and Oliver Salvatore Romano. He leaves behind his brother Donald Romano and wife Terry, sister Lucille Romano and her significant other Jim Wrisley, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom enriched his life.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the Vitas Hospice Team, whose compassionate care extended to both Bob and his family, providing not only physical support but also spiritual comfort during his final days.
