Robert "Bob" Lyndon
Ware
Jan 21, 1929 — Feb 9, 2025
Robert (Bob) Lyndon Ware passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, with his wife and
family by his side. Bob was born to Henry Grady Ware and Girdie Hutchison Ware on January 21,
1929, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He and his younger sister Ramona were raised in the shadows of the
Oklahoma A&M College campus, now known as Oklahoma State University, where their parents
were professors. The Ware family household valued education and resilience, and Bob displayed
that upbringing throughout his life. Bob developed his independence and grit as a young boy after
suffering an eye injury that left him blind in one eye. To receive ongoing medical treatment for that
eye, he regularly traveled alone as a child from Stillwater to Oklahoma City by bus, and he showed
uncommon perseverance and ability to overcome the effects of his injury, including learning to play
golf, which would become a lifelong hobby that kept him active into his 90s.
After graduating from Stillwater High School, he attended Oklahoma A&M, earning a degree
in Hotel and Restaurant Administration, and he later earned an MBA from the University of Dallas.
Bob was blessed with three children from his first marriage – Bruce, Marcia, and Lisa. After that
marriage ended, his career in food service led him to Iowa City, Iowa, where in 1961, he met Carol
Ann Guernsey, and they began a relationship of love, faith, and partnership that would last the rest
of his life. Bob was injured in a serious boating accident in Iowa, but again he had the resilience
and good fortune to recover, and he and Carol shared a love for boating that endured for decades.
He and Carol married in 1963 and first lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, before settling in Irving,
Texas, where Bob was employed at the University of Dallas.
In Irving, Bob and Carol were blessed to find two communities that would become the
pillars of their family life – the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and the neighborhood where they
purchased a home on North Gloucester Street in 1967. Their three children, Alan, Bryan, and
Carla, were born and raised in these nurturing environments. Bob and Carol enjoyed many friends,
including their neighbors and best friends, Bob and Abbie Davis, of nearly 60 years. While raising
their family, Bob's career evolved to business administration at several colleges and universities
and later to end-user computing and administration in banking.
All the while, the anchors of Bob's life were his loving wife Carol, his faith, his family, and his
community. He enjoyed coaching his sons in baseball, teaching the family to waterski, playing
family games, challenging himself with puzzles and logic games, and hosting countless gatherings
of family, friends, and neighbors. Forever a sports fan, Bob was a passionate supporter of both the
Dallas and Oklahoma State Cowboys, as well as the Texas Rangers and Texas Aggies. Bob loved to
tinker with technology, was an early adopter of personal computing, and later was never without his
phone, often texting, emailing, and checking his phone repeatedly for sports updates. He loved to
try every golf training tool or gadget he could find, always refining his game and many times posting
scores lower than his age. Golf provided him such joy, sportsmanship, and camaraderie – he
enjoyed spending time in the clubhouse telling stories with his many golf buddies. In his
retirement, Bob was a tireless volunteer in Irving, including at Baylor, Scott & White Hospital, and
for 30 years at Redeemer Montessori School, where the kids called him "Mr. Bob" as he carried on
the family legacy of early childhood education. Bob and Carol traveled extensively in their
retirement years and especially enjoyed their annual trips to Rangers' spring training. Bob was a
proud dad and "GrandBob," regularly sharing tales of his children's and grandchildren's adventures
and achievements in business, the classroom, or on the dance stage, marching band field, and
hockey rink.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Henry Grady Ware and Girdie Hutchison Ware,
his mother-in-law Sylvia Guernsey Bradford, sister and brother-in-law Ramona Ware Emmons Paul
and Homer Paul, brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Jean Guernsey, and brother-in-law and
sister-in-law Dan and Pat Guernsey. He is survived by his wife Carol Guernsey Ware, son Alan Ware
and daughter-in-law Karen, son Bryan Ware and daughter-in-law Holly, daughter Carla Ware Hitz,
children from his first marriage Bruce Naughton, Marcia Lutostanski and Lisa Bolten, grandchildren
Brandon Ware, Emma Ware, Kai Hitz, William Franklin and Lillian Franklin, and a host of family,
friends, and neighbors whom Bob held dear to his heart. His guidance, support, wisdom, service,
friendship, smile, storytelling, and love will be deeply missed.
Services in celebration of Bob's life will be held March 1, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the
Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Irving, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to
the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer Building Fund, 2700 Warren Circle, Irving, TX 75062.
