Obituary

Prentice Dewey Scoggins, 87, a resident of Irving, Texas since 1959, passed away on June 20th at his home. Born January 8, 1937 in Fouke, Arkansas he graduated from Genoa High School where he was a star athlete and valedictorian. He worked in various sales roles for over 40 years. He was a deacon and long-term member of First Baptist Church in Irving, and a charter member of Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas. He married his high school sweetheart, Doris Jean Starkey, on July 16, 1957 and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary last year. Prentice was the ultimate "people person" and he never met a stranger. His love for his Savior and his family always took precedence over promotions at work or other outside activities. He served as coach for each of his sons baseball and basketball teams until they began playing on organized school teams. At church he could be found teaching a Sunday School class of young married couples and later leading the parking ministry for Fellowship Church. One of only two children, he was an example of rising above tough circumstances as his father was killed while his mother was pregnant with him. By trusting his Savior Jesus Christ and prioritizing family, he leaves a Godly legacy of love for his church, his family, and many others. He is survived by his wife Doris of Irving; son Prentice Alan Scoggins and wife Marian, and daughter-in-law Jan Scoggins: three grandchildren, Brenna Kathlene Newman and husband Derek, Nicole Diane Brown and husband James, and Jenna Elizabeth Scoggins: and five great grandchildren, Austin Ray Newman, Landon John Newman, Chayce Nicole Brown, Chloe Mae Brown, and Alan James (AJ) Brown. He was preceded in death by his father Dewey Scoggins, his mother Bessie Scoggins, his brother Lynn Scoggins, and his son Dewey Brent Scoggins. Funeral service will be 3:00 PM, Monday, June 24, 2024 at the Fellowship Church in Grapevine, TX, with Rev. Ed Young and Owen Goff officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Irving. Friends and family may visit, Sunday, June 23rd from 2:00 pm - 4:00PM at the Colonial Funeral Homes of Irving Chapel.
