Obituary

Max Albert Tuttle, Jr., of Irving, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, one day before his 88th birthday, after a long battle with myelodysplastic syndrome. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones. Max was born in Indianapolis, IN on June 27, 1924, to Max A. Tuttle, Sr. and Mary Jo Honecker Tuttle. Max was an Eagle Scout, and graduated with honors from Shortridge High School. In 1942 he entered Purdue University on the Army Specialized Training Program. He briefly attended the University of Alabama while in basic training, and in 1943 shipped out for overseas duty in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the war Max returned to Purdue where he became a member of Phi Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society. He received his Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1948. Max married Ann Lathrop Winger on April 3, 1948, and commenced his career as a chemical engineer with Standard Oil Co. of California (Socal) in San Francisco. Son Jonathan was born in 1950. In 1952 Max transferred to Socals subsidiary Caltex Petroleum Corp. in N.Y.C., and in 1953, daughter Cynthia was born. From this time forward, Max built a distinguished international career in the petroleum industry, designing and building oil refineries for the good of mankind in the Philippines, Spain, and South Africa. He served twice in South Africa, the second time as General Manager of Caltex Oil (Pty.) Ltd. Max and Ann returned to the United States for good in 1977. Max took on increasingly senior roles at Caltex, including Vice President of Economic Development and Vice President of Marketing for Australia, New Zealand, and Southern and Eastern Africa. By the time of his retirement in 1986, he was Senior Vice President of Caltex, then headquartered in Dallas, Texas. His retirement years were filled with his passion for oil painting, and he embarked on many road trips to the far corners of Texas with Ann to paint the states awe-inspiring canyons, prairies, and sea shores. Max is survived by his wife, Ann; his daughter, Cynthia Edwards; his grandson, Winston Edwards; his brother, David Tuttle and wife Pat, all of Texas. He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan and his sister, Doris Curran. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that Memorial Gifts be made to the Salvation Army.
