Matilda "Midge" Martin, 98, a long time resident of Irving, passed away on Monday November 8, at her home in Garland.
Midge was born on August 17, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Leopold and Anna Stopfer. She grew up in Philadelphia, and then as a young woman moved to the Bay Area to work in the war effort at a submarine parts manufacturer in Mare Island, California. Before she left Philadelphia, Midge met Frank Martin, who was in the Army stationed in nearby New Jersey while awaiting departure for North Africa. After Franks return from the war he and Midge were married in Little Rock, Arkansas, on February 26, 1946.
Frank and Midge later moved to Dallas, Texas, where Frank began his career as a photoengraver, and where they started a family. They settled in Irving, Texas, where they raised their family and lived for over 50 years, returning to Irving again after many years of retirement at Lake Texoma. Midge also retired from a career in the graphic arts, having worked for many years at the yearbook publisher Taylor Publishing Company in Dallas.
Midge loved working in her flower gardens. She enjoyed knitting and sewing, and she sewed many of her daughters dresses as they grew up. She enjoyed cooking and was a great cook. But it was her family that meant the most to her. Midge made certain that her children were educated in music and insisted that they all take music lessons and learn the piano. She attended all of their recitals, choir performances, band concerts, musicals, and baseball and football games. She loved being a grandmother. Midge also had a strong and abiding faith, and shared that faith with Frank to whom she was married for over 63 years.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank in 2009, and three daughters, Barbara Martin, Linda Crowder and Jeanie Barber, she is survived by two daughters, Milli McKay and Diane Hamon; a son Ben Martin; five grandchildren, Brant Barber (Cortney), Brandy Chalkley (Adam), Jason Barber (Amy), Courtney Davenport (Aaron), and Roy Bradford McKay (Ashley); eleven great grandchildren, Hailey Barber, Kaylee Sweeney, Madelyn Chalkley, Caroline Chalkley, Hunter Barber, Brayson Barber, Ashlyn Barber, Landon Davenport, Jack Davenport, Ian McKay, and Callum McKay; and three great-great grandchildren Sawyer Schmidt, Oliver Youts, and Brynnlee Youts.
