Obituary

Martha Glynn Whitfield Hardin (lovingly known as Mimi), 88 years of age, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 3, 2015 in Irving, Texas after a prolonged illness. She was born on June 11, 1927 in Gilmore, Texas to James Lester and Julia Irene Lindsay Whitfield. In recent years debilities limited Marthas involvement in favorite activities such as gardening, traveling, hosting large groups of family and their friends, crafting, and making beautiful greeting cards for every imaginable occasion (dozens of which are stored in personal treasure boxes). Nonetheless, her passions for these pastimes never left her. To all her family, Mimi is remembered as a champion singer with the Sweet Adelines in the 1960s who continued to sing (and especially hum!) to the very end; an amazing seamstress who used her skills to supplement her young familys income and dress her daughters like a million bucks on a working class budget; a woman of colorful style whose big jingle-jangly jewelry delighted an endless number of glamour-dreaming little girls; an avid traveler who explored the world with her husband, Dudley, after their three girls were grown; a true southern cook right down to her sweet tea; a roller-coaster riding adventurer; a lover of all things Christmas whose decorations would illicit envy from NYC Macys window designers; and an absolute magician with crisp paper, double-sided tape and ribbon (just ask Mr. Peppermint). As the matriarch of a large and growing family, Mimi inspired creativity, travel lust and love of the Dallas Cowboys for multiple generations. She will be deeply missed. Martha is survived by her daughters, R. Jane Hardin and Mitzi Porter and their families, which includes son-in-law, Jeff Feigenson; eight beloved grandchildren (Julie Rable, Russell Rabel, Jennifer Torres, Scott Rabel, Rebecca Young, Mika Hopper, Heather Davis, and Haley Porter); seven great-grandchildren for whom her pride was boundless (Lexton Rabel, Jordan Kile, Tyler Rabel, Quinn Torres, Mayce Rabel, Hannah Gardner and Etta Hopper); and her two sisters (Sue Vititow and Kathy Flynn). She is preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Vickie Ann Rabel, and her husband of 68 years, Dudley Douglas Hardin. A visitation will be held at Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home, 606 West Airport Freeway in Irving, TX from 6-8 PM, Monday, 10/5/15 with service to follow there at 11 AM, Tuesday, 10/6/15. Martha will be buried privately with her life-long partner, Dudley, at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
