Obituary

Madeleine Marie Lowery passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025 after a beautiful few weeks surrounded by her children and loved ones.

Born September 21st, 1954, Madeleine's life was defined by a spirit of care. She grew up in Fort Worth, the eldest of the late William and Martha Murphy's nine children. She dedicated her early adulthood to volunteer work serving the poor. After marrying her late husband Mark Lowery, she dedicated herself to raising a family. Madeleine derived deep pleasure from her role as a mother to David, Daniel, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Nathan, Rebecca, Thomas, Mary Margaret, and Anna, often describing motherhood as the greatest joy of her life. She further displayed loving fortitude when she became her husband's primary caretaker while he suffered from Parkinson's disease.

Although she gave selflessly of herself to others, Madeleine also had many pursuits of her own to which she dedicated late nights and early mornings. Among her creative passions were hand quilting, sourdough baking, gardening, solving sudoku, building a wood-burning oven, and homeschooling. She maintained a rich intellectual life, with affinities for theology and literature, especially Charles Dickens. Her diverse interests sustained her throughout her years of caregiving and her final years of struggle against cancer.

Central to every aspect of Madeleine's life was her devout Catholic faith. In God she discovered the wells of hope and strength needed to navigate the challenges of life. Her faith carried her through the highs and lows of her life and filled her final days with peace.

She is succeeded by her eight siblings, nine children, and eight grandchildren, and predeceased by her parents, her husband Mark, and her grandson Benedict.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Fairfield Carmelites (https://www.fairfieldcarmelites.org/take-action), a Carmelite order close to Madeleine's heart because of their project building a new monastery by hand.

The funeral mass will be at the Chapel of the Incarnation at University of Dallas at 1:30pm on Wednesday, December 10th, with a reception to follow from 3:00-5:00pm at the Rathskeller lounge on campus.
