Obituary

Dana Lawton Blalock of Irving, TX was called home to be with the Lord in the early morning of August 24, 2024 at the age of 95. He is proceeded in death by his mother and father Ada and David Blalock, his sisters Stella DeLozier and Nancy Tipton, and his daughter Connie Blalock. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Blalock, daughter Janice Blalock, niece Carol Vance, nephews Ronnie and David Tipton, and grandson Ryan Blalock-Seba. He was born on July 23, 1929 to Ada and David Blalock and grew up on a farm in Seymour, Tennessee. After graduating high school, he attended Mars Hill College near Ashville, North Carolina. He continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin, earning at B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering in 1954. He met his beloved bride in Big Lake, Texas, and they were married in 1956. Lawton began his career at the Chance Vought Corporation in 1956 and continued his work with the company (later Lockheed Martin) through the end of his career. After traveling the country for several years through Lawtons work assignments, he and Dorothy (Dot) settled in Irving, Texas in 1960 in a home they would live in for the rest of his life. Their first daughter, Janice, was born in 1957 and a second daughter, Connie, was born in 1959. Lawton had a passion for aircraft of all kinds and knew his calling was in Aeronautics from a young age. He began his employment at Chance Vaught as a Flight Test Data Engineer. Over his 45-year career, his projects spanned from flight testing of defense aircraft to missiles. Lawton and Dot continued their love of travel, enjoying summer vacations with their children in Lawtons childhood home of Tennessee in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains, and in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. In 1989 they took their dream trip, visiting Dots family in Alaska where they experienced salmon fishing and other Alaskan adventures. Lawton was also an avid fisher, enjoying both freshwater fishing in Texas Lakes, and saltwater fishing in the Port Aransas area of the Gulf Coast. Later in his life, he enjoyed fishing trips with his grandson Ryan. Lawton served as cubmaster of Ryans troop and they enjoyed working in the yard, throwing the football and watching sports together with their favorite refreshments of popcorn and fresh peeled oranges. Lawtons faith was the most important part of his life. He and Dot joined MacArthur Boulevard Baptist Church in 1965 and remained active members in the church over his lifetime. Lawton served the church in roles that included financial assistant in the counting of weekly offerings and as a Deacon for many years. But the most enjoyable position he held was greeting church members in the parking lot as they arrived on Sunday mornings. Witnessing until his very last days brought him much joy. Lawton will be remembered for his kindness, strength and intelligence, and his memory will live on in our hearts.
