Juanita Marie Seastrunk, known by her friends as "Wonnie", was born on June 28, 1929 in Star, Texas to Alvin and Opal (Jones) Harper. She became a Christian at an early age, probably 6 or 7 years old, and was baptized in the Lampasas River.
Wonnie moved to Union Bower (now within the city of Irving) when she was in the 8th grade. While at Irving High School, she was a standout forward on the basketball team. Her home in Union Bower was three miles from the school and she had to walk to and from school. She said basketball practice was usually not over until about 6:30 in the evening, then she would walk home after practice. She said you just had to be determined. Like a lot of people at that time, the family had very little money and she grew up on a farm picking cotton and working on the farm.
Wonnie was blessed to have six siblings: Naomi Hughes and Nelson Harper preceded her in death, Nelda Hughes, Mary Lou Rodriguez, Alvin Wayne Harper and Kay Lockabee survive her.
Wonnie met her husband Dale Seastrunk at the Methodist Church in Union Bower (there was no Baptist Church in Union Bower at the time). If you have been in Irving very long, you know the little Methodist Church as Harveys BBQ. They were married on April 24, 1948 in Rockwall Texas.
Wonnie is also preceded in death by her husband Dale Seastrunk. She leaves behind her son Ken of Irving, grandchildren: Jon Seastrunk and wife Amber of White Settlement and step-grandson, Steve Bate of Houston; and great-grandchildren: Caleb, Jacob and Gabriel Seastrunk, Hannah, Tyler and Connor Bate.
Wonnie was a devout Christian who loved Jesus and always tried to live a good Christian life. She was loved and admired by all who knew her.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 1 from 2-4 p.m. at Donnellys Colonial Funeral Home, 606 West Airport Freeway, Irving, Texas. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 2 at Plymouth Park Baptist Church, 1714 North Story Road, Irving, Texas 75061. Rev. Bob Harper will officiate. Burial to follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, 1413 East Irving Boulevard, Irving, Texas 75060.
