Joe was famously known for his devoted love to his family, country and football. He also loved his Lord and he would begin each morning in prayer, worship and devotion. He loved young people, often encouraging them to excel in their skills. He could well identify with the hardships life can bring, having lost his mother at the age of three. He grew up to understand the challenges life can bring.
His dad cared for him and his three siblings and always wished to keep them together. However, due to his dads employment with the railroad, it necessitated travel which took his dad away many nights. They were often left with aunts, uncles and cousins with which to share their limited, humble dwellings.
Joe became a defender of his siblings and thrived with ambition to make money as a little shoe-shine boy when he was only about seven or eight years of age. Then, became a migrant worker in the fields of south Texas to eventually a business proprietor in Irving. It took great steps of courage to achieve the level of success to which he came to enjoy. Joe was a giver from an early age, he had a big heart of compassion, often giving to those in need.
He attended Donna High School and achieved a GED. At 20 years of age, he entered the Army, December 1965 and received basic training at Ft Polk, Louisiana. He was a brave soldier who was willing to lay down his life for our freedom. He rendered his service in the Vietnam War until he was given an honorable discharge in June of 1967.
Soon after his returned from military service he got married and was blessed with twin boys. In order to achieve greater success for his family, in 1968, he moved his family to the Dallas Area.
He acquired a position with LTV, working in aircraft assembly. He was a high-level achiever, usually with at least two jobs and always saving for a brighter future for himself and his family. He became an apartment manager soon after moving to Irving and was greatly favored by the apartment owners, Mr. and Mrs. Crassons. He became their personal assistant in their later years, all the while maintaining his regular employment.
His children became his pride and joy, raising them to become avid sports fans and members of their high school football team. He entertained many of their friends, giving parties in their home, which he eventually purchased from the estate of his employer. His sons friend became his friends, influencing many of them and helping them along their path in life.
He later became a warehouse supervisor for The Timken Company until he retired after 26 years of Service. However, he soon found other ventures. He became the owner of Mr. "Gs" Pizza Subs and Wings in Irving, TX. After retirement, he was employed by the City of Irving Parks and Recreation Dept. He worked as a lifeguard at the Heritage Senior Activity Center. Later, became driver for the city aiding seniors in transportation to the Heritage Center.
He became actively involved in Calvary Temple in Irving, TX, taking mission trips with the church group. He discovered a deeper relationship in the Lord and became active in several church activities there. In 2001 he married Linda Buchannon, together they loved traveling and enjoyed fun times together, until his health started declining. Joe was tired of the fight and was concerned of being a burden to other and just wanted to go home to be with his Lord.
May his life of dedicated love and commitment to achieve have a long-lasting impact on each of us. Its not where you start in life but where you finish that really counts.
