Obituary

Joan Harrelson was born in Loving, TX on October 14, 1930, and passed away in Irving, TX on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023 at the age of 93. She graduated from Graham High School then moved to Dallas to begin a new job and find adventure. She and a friend, Mable Jennings (later Mable Harrelson) traveled to Dallas by bus two weeks before graduation to find jobs at Southwestern Bell and a place to live in a shared room in a womens boarding house. Shortly after moving to Dallas, she met the love of her life, Hubert Harrelson, when friends convinced them to go on a blind date to a weenie roast (thats what she always called it, though you might call it a hot dog cookout). Joan worked as a supervisor at Southwestern Bell/AT&T for more than 30 years before taking early retirement. Joan loved spending time with her family talking, cooking, eating, and playing cards, dominoes, and board games. Joan loved reading, and passed her love of books on to her family. She also loved exercising her green thumb to grow beautiful flowers, camping in their 5th wheel trailer with a great group of adventurous friends, and square dancing. She shared her love and laughter with all who knew her. She was known for her hospitality for making sure everyone had plenty of good food and good times. Joan and Hubert traveled far and wide with their camping friends, gathering experiences and seeing as many of the sights of this beautiful land as they could fit in, while making memories for a lifetime. They passed their adventurous spirit and love for family and friends down to their family. Joan was preceded in death by her beloved Hubert, by her parents Cyrus Frank Newman and Mary Newman, and by her three brothers, David Newman & his wife Fabiola, Kenneth Newman & his wife Betty, and John Newman. She is survived by her two daughters, Pamela Harrelson and Laura Strater, son-in-laws Scott Strater and Doug Bradford, and grandchildren and spouses Sean & Allison Strater, Zach and Lauren Strater, Natalie Bradford & Sheroze Sheriffdeen and one great granddaughter, Maeve Strater, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Thursday night from 6 8 at Donnellys Colonial Funeral Home in Irving at 606 W Airport Freeway, and the Celebration of Life Services will be held at Oak View Baptist Church on Friday at noon at 1004 S Story Rd, Irving, TX.
