Obituary

Jane Welch Schlehr, age 90, a resident of Irving, Texas, passed away on November 7, 2010 at her daughter's home in Denton, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in 1920 in Kentucky and spent most of her childhood in Ohio. The daughter of the late Reverend Harry Houchens Welch and the late Cornelia Cynthia Welch, Jane was the oldest of five siblings. She sang and played piano for her father's church. She studied nutrition at Mars Hill College in North Carolina and then started her career in medical technology at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Jane was a certified medical technologist and worked as a bacteriologist, hematologist, and an infection control specialist for both the public and the private sectors. She did neurological research at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland and was on staff at private labs and several metropolitan area hospitals, such as Methodist, Wadley Blood Bank, and Irving Hospital. She married Arthur James Edwards on February 29, 1948. They had six children together and lived in Bel Air, Maryland. They divorced in 1968 and Jane then moved to Irving, Texas and married George Schlehr in 1969. She fulfilled a lifelong dream when she graduated from Dallas Baptist College in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in career arts. Jane was an active member of MacArthur Boulevard Baptist Church and pioneered their home-bound ministry, taking the bouquets she made of the alter displays to seniors. She also sang in the choir, supported missionary families, and worked with children. Jane was a Mall-Walker who had clocked in the tens of thousands of miles. When she was 64, she was seriously injured in an automobile accident which left her immobilized by multiple pelvic fractures. Her doctor warned her that she might not ever walk again. Despite this, she learned to walk after five months of recovery and went on to win races in her age group. Jane continued walking into her eighties. Jane was preceded in death by her husband, George; her son, Robert Heading, and an infant son, her brothers, Edwin and Truett, and her sister, Iris. Beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Jane is survived by her children, Lyle (Lilac) Bauer of Austin, Texas, Trudy Scola of Sleepy Hollow, Illinois, Arthur James Edwards, Jr. of Herndon, Virginia, Martha (Mafa) Jane Edwards of New York City, Ruth Kimbrough of Denton, Texas, and Susan Welch Edwards of Boyd, Texas, her sixteen grandchildren, her six great-grandchildren, and her siblings, Bobbie Annette Gibson of California and James McKee Welch of Washington State, Her family welcomes floral gifts of flowering bulbs that can be replanted or contributions to the American Bible Society. The memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m., Friday, November 19 at MacArthur Blvd. Baptist Church, 8001 Mustang Drive, Irving.
