JAMES E. "JIM" RIDER age 86, a resident of Irving since 1952, died Saturday, January 30, 2010 in Irving. Born August 18, 1923 in Waco, Texas, he was a graduate of Waco High School, attended Baylor University, and later graduated from Texas Tech in 1950. A US Navy veteran of WW II, he married Jane Durant February 14, 1952 in Jewett, TX. An electrical engineer with Texas Power & Light, he retired after 37 years with the company in 1987 (at that time TU Electric). A longtime active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, he had served in various capacities including as a member of the Vestry and Junior and Senior Warden. He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award. He volunteered at the Irving Senior Citizens Center, assisting seniors with tax returns, and was an instructor for the "55 Alive" defensive driving program. He participated in the Young At Heart show with the Irving Community Television Network. Preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Martha Ball Rider and a son, Patrick Rider, he is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Jane Rider of Irving; sons, JW Rider of Herndon, VA, and Robert (Bob) Rider of Brownwood; daughters, Martha Hocutt of Buffalo, TX, Marjorie Soderstrum of Kensington, Maryland, and Shannon Szymczak of Austin; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home 6:008:00 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Union Cemetery in Leon County, near Jewett. Memorials may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 516 South O'Connor, Irving, 75060.
