Obituary

Franklin Chester Rembert, Jr., M.D. went to be with his Lord on May 16, 2023, due to complications from pulmonary arterial hypertension. He was a beloved husband, father, physician, and good friend to many. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1933 to Franklin C. and Ellen Hyde Rembert, he attended C.E. Byrd High School and graduated magna cum laude from Centenary College. He earned his M.D. degree at L.S.U. School of Medicine in New Orleans. Dr. Rembert interned at Confederate Memorial Medical Center (CMMC) spending days, nights, weekends, and holidays caring for the needy in Shreveport, and later completed training in anesthesiology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Rembert proudly served in the U.S. Navy as an anesthesiologist at the naval hospital in Key West, Florida. Returning to Shreveport as the head of the anesthesiology department at CMMC for 8 years, he moved to Dallas in 1969. Dr. Rembert served on the teaching faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology at U.T. Southwestern Medical School and Parkland Hospital for twenty years, during which he was promoted to Associate Professor. He held memberships in many professional organizations. These included the Louisiana State Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Dallas County Medical Society, and the American and Texas Societies of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Rembert was also a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists, and was a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. Throughout his adult life, Dr. Rembert had many interests. He was a longtime member of the Dallas Camera Club and served as president of the Physicians Camera Club for three years. He had a passion for classical piano, studying keyboard works for much of his life and was well known in the local piano community. In addition, he played clarinet with the Dallas-area Hella Shrine Band for eight years. Dr. Rembert was an avid reader of history, especially the Civil War era. He was an active genealogist with membership in the Dallas Genealogical Society and the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. For several years, he wrote a regular commentary page for The Plume, a genealogical and historical newsletter of DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, where his father was born and raised. Dr. Rembert was a God-fearing man, devoted to his family, friends, and Mens Bible Class at Park Cities Baptist Church. Even with his commitments as a physician, professor, musician, husband, and father, he never lost his desire to continue learning. There were things left over he still wanted to do, with much music yet to be played. He faced death with the courage and quiet steadiness founded on his character and personal integrity, believing that life was a process, not of attaining, but of discovering yourself and developing latent talents. Dr. Rembert was predeceased by Mary Ann, his loving wife of fifty-three years, and by his younger daughter, Melinda Wells. He is survived by his older daughter, Dr. Melanie Sorrell, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and her husband, Charles Sorrell.
