Obituary

Frances Belk Shields passed away peacefully, Sunday, February 15, 2026, at home surrounded by her family.

Frances was born March 24, 1925, in Westminster, SC to Rev. Joseph Carlton and Beulah Barker Brown. Frances spent her childhood travelling with her parents and brothers holding tent revivals across several states. This has always been a favorite memory of hers.

Frances was a self-taught piano player, learning by watching her father give lessons to others during their revival trips. She also played the accordion, trombone and saxophone but mostly enjoyed playing piano and organ at church.

The Lord blessed Frances with three Godly husbands who lived the "rest of their lives" loving her. September 13, 1942, she married her high school sweetheart, Edward Honea, who, unfortunately was killed in WWII, August 29, 1944.

She went on to graduate Bible Baptist Seminary with her PhD. in Theology. There she met the man who "followed her all over the South from South Carolina to Texas". July 7, 1946, she married Rev. Marvin T. Belk with whom she raised a son and daughter. Frances worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield (from where she retired TWICE) as well as being instrumental in the founding of several churches in the Irving community. Frances and Marvin were married until Marvin's death, February 25, 1985.

Not too long after, Frances began some health problems, and the Lord saw fit to send Rev. Jesse "Pat" Shields to love and care for her. They were married July 28, 1990, until Pat's home going on August 20, 2013.

Frances lived an amazing God loving, God teaching life. She was affectionately known by everyone she shared the Lord with as "Aunt Frances".

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, her three husbands, brothers and sisters-in-law: Carlton and Juanita Brown, and I. W. & Vivian Brown, nephews: David and Dennis Brown, and niece: Brenda Brown Adams

Left to cherish her memory are her children, James W. Belk and wife, Jesselyn, and Gail Belk Smith and husband, David; grandchildren, Cindy Gail Smith, Carrie Ann Smith, Jesselyn Nicole "Nikki" Hall and husband, Dean; Great-grandchildren, Leighanne Hoover and husband, Wes, Shannon Elaine Smith, and JayJ Belk; Great-great-grandchildren, Kayla, Rylee, Trenton, and Dominick; Sister -in-Law: Bonnie Brown, numerous nephews, nieces and extend family and friends.
