Obituary

Edmond Edward Marak, Sr. a resident of Irving since October 1962, died Thursday September 4, 2025 at a local assisted living facility. The youngest of 8 children, Ed was born to the late Edmund Marak and Elizabeth Gerik Marak on April 3, 1932 in West, Texas. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church and West High School.

Ed served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. He was stationed in California aboard the minesweeper ship, the USS Surfbird. His fondest memory of his time served is when a movie producer asked if they could use the Surfbird as a background ship in the Humphrey Bogart movie, the Caine Mutiny. Ed was at the helm at the ship in the movie scene.

He married his teenage sweetheart from West, Helen Hlavenka, on April 26, 1952 in San Diego, California. After his discharge from the Navy, they moved back to Texas, eventually settling in Irving. Before having children of their own, Ed and Helen raised her teenage nephew Ronnie Neckar and provided temporary housing to many nieces and nephews. Both his sister-in-law, Rose, and mother-in-law lived permanently with them.

Ed worked as a television repairman at Chapman TV in Grand Prairie until his retirement in 1997. He was a charter member of Holy Family of Nazareth Church where he served as a volunteer in the religious education department. He was a former Boy Scout leader.

Ed lovingly provided long term care for Helen, his wife of almost 67 years, while she suffered from dementia. Ed is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers Alfred, Raymond and John and sisters Irene Jezek, Louise Jezek, Wilma Olson and Mary Lee Simcik. Survivors include daughters Antoinette LaBarre and husband Stephen of Irving and Jennifer Clower and husband Scott of Kilgore; sons Eddie Marak, Jr. of McKinney and Michael Marak and wife Barb of Lewisville; seven grandchildren Melissa (Joel) Velasquez, Jimmy Marak, Michael LaBarre, Aubrey LaBarre, Daniel LaBarre, Rachel (Kollin) Hurt and Gracie Clower; and two great grandchildren Alexis Velasquez and Gabriel Velasquez.
