Dudley Douglas (or DD to friends), 93 years of age, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2014 at his home in the Remington in Valley Ranch, Irving, Texas. He was born on January 2, 1921 in Granger, Texas to Roy Storrs Hardin and Tennie Lois Pruitt.
Along with his brother, Roy Henderson Hardin, he had many joyful and memorable boyhood adventures throughout the region. Until recent years, he continued to attend the Jonah reunion where he enjoyed updating friendships more than 80 years strong. Such was his love for central Texas that he owned his own ranch outside of Bartlett, Texas throughout most of his adulthood.
During World War II Dudley served as a radio operator in the South Pacific for the Army Air Corps (the forerunner of the United States Air Force). In addition to cargo and supplies, his crew flew Jack Benny and other dignitaries visiting the troops. One of his crew members, Myrt Vititow of Fort Worth Texas, became not only his best friend but also his brother-in-law, as the two married sisters following the war.
His love of airplanes informed Dudleys post-war career choices. For almost 40 years, he worked for Braniff Airlines as an aircraft mechanic. A proud employee and teammate, he was one of the last dozen crew members present to witness the demise of the airlines in 1982.
Dudley married Martha Glynn Whitfield in 1946 in Fort Worth, Texas, and after their three daughters were grown, had the chance to travel the world together. This past January 1st Dudley and Martha quietly celebrated their 68th anniversary. In addition to Martha, Dudley is survived by his daughters, R Jane Hardin and Mitzi Porter and their families, which includes their son-in-law, Jeff Feigenson; eight beloved grandchildren (Julie Rabel, Russell Rabel, Jennifer Torres, Scott Rabel, Rebecca Young, Mika Hopper, Heather Davis, and Haley Porter); and a lively gaggle of six great-grandchildren that forever gladdened his heart (Lexton Rabel, Jordan Kile, Tyler Rabel, Mayce Rabel, Hannah Gardner and Etta Hopper). He is preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Vickie Ann Rabel.
A visitation will be held at Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home, 606 W Airport Freeway in Irving, TX from 6-8 PM Monday July 21, 2014. Burial service will be at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 11 AM Tuesday, July 22, 2014. The family will gather in Lane A there.
