Obituary

Doris Norene Powell Deming passed away peacefully into Heaven early in the morning on December 29, 2020. Doris was born on January 16, 1923 in Carrollton, TX to James (Jack) Mason Powell and Nora Dean Utley Powell. Doris was the middle child and only daughter of five children. Shortly after she was born, the family moved to Aubrey, TX where she was raised and graduated from high school in 1940. After graduating, Doris moved to Fort Worth and worked for Dickey Manufacturing Co. making military uniforms. After World War II started, the railroads were hiring women to replace the men who were called to service. Doris was hired as a telegraph operator for Southern Pacific Railroad. Doris was sent from town to town where ever she was needed. She worked in Van Alstyne, Anna, Plano, McKinney, Ferris, Mexia, Calvert, Bremond, Hockley, and Corsicana. It was in Corsicana in 1945 that she met her husband, Jasper. Jasper also worked for the railroad. They were married on November 2, 1946. Jasper and Doris had two daughters, Charlotte and Karen. After both girls were in school, Doris worked for the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana as a bookkeeper during their busy season from September 1st to February 1st. When Jasper was promoted to manager of the Southwestern Transportation Co., which was owned by Southern Pacific Railroad, Doris worked part-time as a clerk in his office. In 1964, Jasper was offered a promotion in Fort Worth, and the family moved to Irving. In 1971, Doris was hired as a cashier and bookkeeper for Mary Kay Cosmetics. After 37 years of marriage, Jasper passed away in 1983. They spent their married years raising their daughters, active in their church, traveling, playing cards and dominos, fishing, having fun, and devoted to each other. In 1985, Doris retired from Mary Kay. In 1987, friends from church offered to sell her their lake front property on Cedar Creek Lake. Doris had loved fishing her whole life and living on the lake where she could walk out her back door and fish from her own dock was a dream come true. Doris moved to the lake and made new friends from church, the VFW and volunteering. She loved playing bridge with her friends and canasta with her sons-in-law. Doris loved to dance, go to the "casina" in Shreveport, and hosting fish-fry parties. She also loved having her grandchildren spend summers at her lake home. In 1990, she traveled with a tour group to Russia, England, and France. Doris was just as busy in retirement as she was when she worked at her job. Doris made a lot of "lake friends," and she loved and cared deeply for them. In 2013, at the age of 90 Doris decided to move to Brookdale Assisted Living in Denton, TX to be closer to her family. She hated leaving her home on the lake, but she realized that at her age she needed to be near family and not live alone. The family wants to thank the Brookdale staff and especially the Executive Director Kathy Hamilton for their care and devotion. The family also wants to thank Brookdale Hospice for their kindness in her final days. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Jasper, her four brothers, and her long-time companion Ed Corbett. Doris is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Charlotte and David Pope of Justin, TX and Karen and Andy Raney of Little Elm, TX. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jason Pope and his wife Vicki and Kelly Raney Crawford and her husband Stan. Doris is survived by her great-grandchildren Katherine and Matthew Pope and Andrew and Claire Crawford. Doris is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
