Donald K. Richardson, surrounded by loving family, passed peacefully of natural causes on April 28 at his home in Dallas. He was 94 years of age.
Preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Wanda Jean (Duke) Richardson, he is survived by his four children, Carol Raymond of Highland Village, Randa Beaumont of Plano, Laura Crutchfield of Plano and Mark Richardson of Sandy Hook, Connecticut, as well as six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was born in Randolph, Texas to Roy Richardson and Ada Queener on December 29, 1921. After graduating from Randolph High School, he attended Draughons Business College in Dallas.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy for four years on various ships in the pacific, primarily on the U.S.S. Freemont.
After his wartime service, he returned to Dallas and secured work at Magnolia Petroleum Company as a sales agent and then Assistant Retail Sales Manager. During this time, in 1947, he met and married Wanda Jean Duke of Irving. Thus began a lifetime together of raising a family. As a result of a merger with Magnolia, Donald became an employee of Mobil Oil and built a lifelong career with that company.
He was the resale district manager in Amarillo, Dallas and Kansas City. A promotion offer to become Retail Manager of Retail Marketing in New York took the family to the northeast in 1966. He rose to the position of General Manager for the New England Division headquartered in Boston, and in 1973, he relocated back to New York as General Manager of the Northeast Marketing Region. The family settled in New Canaan, Connecticut until 1980, when his next promotion took empty nesters, Don and Wanda, to McLean, Virginia. Here he concluded his career as General Manager of Resale Marketing for the entire United States until his retirement in 1983. Upon retirement, they came full circle and moved back to Dallas to be closer to their family.
Settling back down in Dallas, Don and Wandas home became a hub for their family, most of whom followed their lead and returned to their Texas roots. He was an avid golfer into his eighties and was a member of Canyon Creek Country Club. Socially active until very recently, he will be missed by many friends who knew him for his quick wit and quiet dignity.
The family received friends at Donnellys Colonial Funeral Home, 606 West Airport Freeway in Irving on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. The funeral was Wednesday, May 4 in the funeral home chapel. Rev. John Richardson of Custer Road United Methodist Church officiated. Burial followed at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Irving.
