Dolores “Dody” Spain, 81, passed away on November 2, 2026, at her eldest daughter’s home in Granbury, Texas. Dody had a heart as big as her beehive and a faith in God just as tall. She shared a deep, devoted love with her late husband, LD Spain. With a huge family and a handful of treasured friends, she was always the first one halfway down the highway when anyone needed her.
She cooked for armies and was the queen of Southern fried chicken. She could linger on the phone for hours… days… months. As a young Army wife she learned to stock up, and she never stopped. Her pantry held cake mixes by the dozen, towers of tuna, and enough Stevia to sweeten all of El Paso.
In her day, Dody was a knockout, with her hair piled sky-high, perfect nails, and not a strand out of place. She loved to dance, adored the littles, and came by her gambling gene honestly. She was known for her Christmas Eve enchiladas, and she and her mother saw more sunrises from a slot machine than from a front porch.
To the littles, she was Mocha. No one could soothe a newborn like she could, and her face never lit up brighter than when one of them was in her lap or on her shoulder.
She filled every wall of her home with testaments to her faith. Jesus could see you from every room in the house.
Her dogs followed her everywhere, mostly to the kitchen.
Dody was preceded in death by her beloved husband, LD Spain; her parents, Burtis and Mary Louise Chenoweth; and her sister, Mary Jane Chenoweth. She is survived by her children, Jerry Falkner (Carol), Joni Dawson (Jerry), Roxanne Wisniewski (Jim), and Krystal Falkner (Sammie); her siblings, David Chenoweth (Ruth), Glenda Low (Ike), and Burt Chenoweth (Stacy); 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and her first great-great-grandchild.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to her devoted caregivers, Debra and Darla, and to Enhabit Hospice and Heart to Heart Hospice for the love and care they gave Dody.
A viewing will be held Friday, November 6, 2026, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at Colonial Funeral Home of Irving, 606 West Airport Freeway (Highway 183), Irving, Texas 75062. Dody will then be laid to rest beside her beloved LD on what would have been his birthday, with a graveside service at 11:00 AM at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, 1413 East Irving Boulevard, Irving, Texas 75060.
Save us a seat at the slots, Mocha.
