Dimas Alfredo Rodriguez passed away on Saturday, April 15th, 2023 at the young age of 29 where he was currently stationed on O'ahu, Hawai'i.
Dimas was a loving husband to April Rodriguez, of over 5 years who he leaves behind. They were married in Irving, Texas on October 14th, 2017 and continued their married life in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
Dimas was born in Dallas, Texas on November 26th, 1993. He is survived by his mother, Maria Ortiz, his little sister, Esme Rodriguez, his step-dad, Mike Richards, and his many dear friends, shipmates, in-laws, and extended family.
Growing up Dimas was always involved in outdoor activities which started in cub scouts. He was part of St. Lukes Boy Scout Troop 770 and the patrol Flying Eagles. He worked several summers at Camp Constantin in the aquatic program where he led courses like first aid responders and sailing. He participated in 3 high-adventure bases over the U.S. including Philmont Scout Ranch. He then became an Eagle Scout on November 9th, 2010 where he continued to serve and lead in many capacities at district and council levels.
He graduated from Irving High School in 2013 where he competed in swimming and water polo. He was the swim captain of his team his senior year. He practiced and played with other Irving schools at North Lake College Natatorium. This is where he met his wife, April. After high school, he then went on to join the United States Coast Guard. He graduated from boot camp with company Juliet 193 on October 7th, 2016 in Cape May, NJ.
His first unit was on the USCG Cutter Sherman in Honolulu, HI from October 14th, 2016 to August 22nd, 2018. His second and final unit was USCG Base Honolulu from August 23, 2018 to April 15, 2023. At work he was a constant professional on and off-duty. He was a source of inspiration to his peers through the example he set with how to maintain a high level of fitness and still get the day-to-day work tasks completed.
Dimas enjoyed many activities like running, swimming, snorkeling, backpacking, and traveling. Dimas was always down for anything whether it was an adventure or just hanging out at the beach. He was very physically active and entered many local races. In 2022 and 2023 alone, he competed in over 26 races that included swimming, running, triathlons, and his first full marathon. He competed in ultimate frisbee and pickleball with the Coast Guard in military intramural games. If you knew Dimas he was always listening to music, even while in the shower. He could quote any line of a movie as he was a big movie buff which he got from his mom, Maria. He would talk about movies for hours with his best friends over the phone. He could make anyone laugh with his silly jokes, and connected many people and friends together often just by listening.
Dimas loved helping people. This is one reason he was preparing and training to go to A School to become an AST aka a rescue swimmer for the USCG. Growing up one of his first jobs was lifeguarding. Dimas would be there to help if you called on him, or even if you were a stranger on the side of the road having trouble with your car. He would be there. He loved cars, specifically his dream car was a Camaro. His uncle, Joe Ortiz, who later passed away was one of the inspirations who got him into cars. You could often find him working late at night under the hood of a car with his coworkers from Discount Tire or his best friend, Joe Sanchez.
He was an active member of The Ranch Church/South Shore Christian Fellowship in Waimanalo, HI where he and his wife volunteered teaching Sunday preschool classes for 5 years. He was very involved in volunteering with various events such as golf tournaments, food banks, military ceremonies, and helping run PE classes at a local school.
