Dawn Leigh (Horsley) Roy, 50, passed away unexpectedly from surgical complications on Friday, July 6, 2018 in Grapevine, TX, surrounded by her two daughters.
Dawn was born in Wheaton, IL on November 2, 1967 to Donald and Yvonne (Triplett) Horsley. The family moved to Irving, TX when Dawn was just 3 years old and though Texas was essentially her home, she always longed to move back up north someday. She attended and graduated from Nimitz High School in 1987.
Dawn married Mark Roy in 1986, and together they had two children, Lauren and Briana. Though the two separated in 1993, they continued to operate as a family of four whether it be for family events or special outings.
Dawn worked at Protection 1/ADT for 24 years. Though she held many positions and titles within the company, her last position was as an Executive Assistant to Senior Legal Counsel. Dawn was well known within the P1 family, and was often that smiling face in the hall that you could always count on. She was never too busy to lend a helping hand to fellow employees and always rose to the occasion to help organize events, especially if it was for a good cause. Her greatest achievement at P1 came in 2011 when she was nominated and won a spot in the Presidents Circle of Top 50 Employees that resulted in a trip to Jamaica; it was Dawns first trip out of the US and she was instantly enamored.
Dawn enjoyed attending concerts as she was an avid music lover, attending comedy specials, going to the movies, traveling with her daughters, reading, playing cards and board games, as well as cooking and baking for those she loved. Dawn was a foodie and always looked forward to trying new cuisines and seeking out new restaurants to try with her family. She also loved her fur babies as they were her four-legged children, and would often arrange her social calendar around her dogs needs much to her two-legged childrens chagrin.
Dawn will be remembered for her feisty and fighting spirit as she was a two time cancer survivor (breast and colorectal). Even in her worst of times she would have a smile on her face and never backed down from the challenges placed upon her health. Her impeccable comedic timing, knack for sarcasm, always entertaining storytelling, and loveable laugh will be sorely missed by many.
Dawn is survived by her daughters, Briana Roy and Lauren Toler, son-in-law Wade Toler, two grandsons, Bryce and Hollis Toler, as well as her beloved MinPin, Buttons; ex-husband Mark, mother-in-law, Loy Roy; older siblings, Rita (husband Alan), Terry (wife Shelley) and Donald; in addition to several nieces and nephews and extended family, and the many friends and coworkers shes made along the way. Dawn was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Yvonne Horsley, father-in-law Bud Roy, her two dogs, Rico and Doey, and older sister, Debbie.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider making a memorial donation in Dawns name to one of her preferred charities: The American Cancer Society, The Salvation Army, or the SPCA. A Memorial Service is planned for Friday, July 20th at 10 a.m. in the Chapel at Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home, 606 West Airport Freeway, Irving, Texas.
