Charlene Mccravey
Gilbert
Aug 2, 1933 — Oct 31, 2025
Charlene McCravey Gilbert
August 2, 1933 – October 31, 2025
Charlene McCravey Gilbert, beloved daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Bettie) and Claude
McCravey, was born on August 2, 1933, in the Dunbar community of Emory, Texas. A
devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Charlene passed away on October 31, 2025,
surrounded by her family.
A bright and determined student, Charlene graduated as salutatorian of her class at
Emory High School at the age of 16.
At the age of 14, Charlene caught the eye of John Gilbert, and the two began a
courtship that would last a lifetime. After their marriage in Dallas, Johnny served in the
U.S. Army, while Charlene became a registered nurse, working in the surgical unit at St.
Paul's Hospital. She later earned her real estate license and built a long, successful
career as an agent and broker in Irving, Texas.
Charlene and Johnny built a life rooted in love, faith, and family, raising two sons, Larry
and Mark Gilbert. After Johnny's passing at age 59, Charlene carried on with grace and
strength, and she moved to Coppell, Texas to be near her sons and their families.
A three-time cancer survivor, she faced every challenge with courage and
determination. Her greatest goal was to see her three grandchildren, Nicole Gilbert,
John Gilbert (Sierra), and Natalie Gilbert, graduate from college, which they proudly did
from Texas Tech University, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Texas,
respectively.
Competitive and spirited, she found joy in fishing, bridge, and gardening. She was
admired for her intelligence, work ethic, and deep devotion to her family, qualities that
defined her throughout her life.
Charlene is survived by her two sons, Larry Gilbert (Gwen), Mark Gilbert (Jane), her
cherished grandchildren, and her sister, Shirley "Bobbie" Trammell. Her family will
remember her for her fierce independence, unwavering faith, and the example she set
of what it means to work hard, love deeply, and live with integrity.
Charlene often reflected with gratitude on a full and meaningful life, rich with purpose,
and joy. She now rejoices in Heaven with her Husband, her parents, 3 siblings (Ruth,
Edmond, and Eugene), and her dog (Freddie).
