Barney Gibbs Upton, Jr., died unexpectedly on April 12, 2022, at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He was born February 19, 1948, in Wichita, Kansas, the eldest son of Barney Gibbs Upton, Sr., and Alice Lucritia (Pierce) Upton. Barney served in the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army 20th Engineer Brigade from 1968-1971. After moving to Texas, Barney married Mary Chandler (Rollings) Upton in 1985. They celebrated 35 years of marriage until her passing in 2021. Known by many different names: friend, brother, husband, dad, uncle, Grumps, BJ, a friend of Bill W., or just Barney, he touched the lives of too many people to count. He built a career as a Government Service Agency employee, becoming a multi-regional Childcare Program Manager for the Federal Government, overseeing all aspects of planning, building, and maintaining child care centers for federal employees in government buildings. Barney played an important role in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing and was declared an invaluable resource to the families, city, and region. He also reinvigorated the Missing Child Notice Program which was close to his heart. Barney was an avid golfer and long-standing member of the Texas Star Golf Club.
Barney sped through life at 100 miles per hour, a cup of coffee in one hand and a banana in the other. Whether it was boxing in his youth, hustling at the pool table, driving fast cars and motorcycles, obtaining demigod status in Rocket League at 74 years old, boogie boarding with his children and grandchildren on family beach vacations, trotting across the globe, cheering on Texas sports teams, or rocking out to The Stones, he lived life to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Mark Anthony Upton, his first wife, Jane Belinda Jordan, and his wife, Mary Chandler Upton. Surviving family include his sons, Timothy Albert Musson and wife Angie, Matthew Isaac Musson and wife Michelle, a step-son, Richard Carl Capodagli, a step-daughter Carlyn Mary Capodagli Wooten, as well as 24 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Barneys surviving siblings include Stephen Tyrone Upton, Michael Stewart Upton, Alice Lynn Upton, Jerry Elmer Maskrid, and Teresa Marie Darling.
