Joe and Marion moved to Irving and became members of First Baptist Church, Irving in 1961. He was an active member of the church. He taught 8th graders in Sunday School. Joe was ordained as a Deacon on January 11, 1970. He served twice as Chairman of the Finance Committee. He could often be found collecting the offering, serving the Lords Supper, teaching bible studies, visiting seniors in the nursing homes, attending mens prayer breakfasts, and serving the widows under his care in many ways. He developed many friendships through the years.
After retirement in 1992, Joe remained active. Golf was a favorite way to spend his time. He played weekly with his church buddies, Bob Dodson, Chuck Stevenson and Bill Porter. One of the favorite things about these golf outings was the cookies provided by Dot Porter. They later became known as "Golf Cookies". Joe also played weekly rounds of golf with his Union Bankers buddy Fred Dean. They would take turns traveling to each others side of town, play a round of golf and follow it up with lunch. Another passion was spending time at his lake house at Holly Lake. Many family holidays and casual weekends were spent enjoying the beauty of east Texas. He also spent time there hanging out with Bob Dodson playing cards and working on projects around the property. Retirement allowed Joe and Marion time to travel. There was a family cruise to Alaska to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, a train trip across Canada with Malcome and Shirley Greer, and a tour of Europe with a group of FBC Irving. Retirement gave Joe time to enjoy his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
